There are vague references in the ancient sources to the type of furniture that could be found in taverns, for example Martial (V.70) mentions stools and chairs, but it is interesting that none of the sources mention a shop counter. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the function of many counters has been misinterpreted. ![]() For example a taberna is often described as a 'tavern' if the counter within enclosed large earthenware vessels known as dolia. As such, the selling counter has become an important diagnostic key for the identification of the function of the surrounding space. ![]() The significance of this element is that in many cases the purpose of a building or room is unknown, and it is frequently through the existence of a taberna counter that a building gains its identity. One of the most characteristic features of the tabernae of Pompeii and Herculaneum is the distinctive shop counter or mensa.
